Title: Oak's Thoughts...
Post by: Oak on February 10, 2010, 10:01:15 AM
...On Continuing this Military Campaign:
Word of the many victories of Gryphon Company has spread among the various Fort Commanders throughout the Kingdom of Lomar, and in fact word has even reached the Royal Military Advisor to Good King Malsheim (sp?). The King and His advisors are quite proud of the accomplishments of Gryphon Company and see a good bit of potential. They, however, are not completely concerned with reports of slack discipline and little internal organization. This is not putting blame on the Company, rather in the manner through which Command has changed numerous times.
After a good amount of deliberation the King and His Advisors believe that the Company should not be assigned to any one single Fort Commander, but does require a strong guiding hand. One that reports directly to the Highest Advisor in the Court and in effect to the King Himself. So it is the Malsheim has sent a sealed letter to one of His closest confidants, a retired Commander and former Chief Military Advisor; Leighton Carrington III. Commander Carrington served in the King's Court and His Army for over twenty years. He has a reputaion for be a fierce warrior who specialized in gurilla tactics.
Commander Carrington descends from a long line of soldiers and officers, though he is the first in his family not to take the path of Church trained Knights. It is unclear as to why he chose to take a different path than his Father and his Father's Father. He still remains a faithful Avarian, routinely supporting the Church in numerous ways. Yet the Commander's loyalty to his King is unquestioned. He is currently enroute to meet with his King to discuss details of the King's plan. The King and His Advisors are open to suggestions and/or comments from the trusted Commander Carrington before proceeding...

So what does this little bit indicate as to the direction I might go? Well, primarily a single entity that your group would report to. I would try to keep to Dreamer's example as I percieve it, with various missions as a gurilla unit (think special forces of the dark ages) from a more fluid starting point. You would have a "mobile" starting point each week, either in Kingdom or out in the field. Some expectations would be enforced and expected; keep the safety of the citizens of Lomar in the utmost regard, briefings and debriefings would be kept according to protocol (one person to communicate with the Commander with but a short period after where the rest may speak freely), perhaps even some drill and ceremony for the encouragement and moralle of other Lomarian soldiers and the citizenry (added in for flavor but with potential to earn xp bonuses).
The Commander may also distribute "Dress Uniforms" bearing the Gryphon Company ensignia for special ocassions, but allow work attire to be more suited for gurilla opperations. This may entail an inspection on ocassion requiring your group to utalize their crafting skills or pay for "alterations".
Any other ideas or suggestions post here...

Well oak becoming part of the royal guard sounds fun… a bi weekly game though sounds good. If people wanted to have a rotating game set with two different campaigns running every other week I could take the other week with something different. So let me throw down some different campaign Ideas that either of us could do.
Campaign idea 1
A Kobold's Life
Adventurers drink hard and fight hard, when the coin runs out they head out into the hills to seek adventure and more coins. Little thought is given to those that they take it from. In this Campaign the players will play those that they would normally fight and plunder. As kobold's every day is a struggle. The other monsters tried to pick on the smaller kobold, adventurers raid, and food is scarce. Are you cunning enough to make it as a kobold?
Upside-
Downside- all pcs have to play halflings and be morphed into kobolds, event locked characters.
Campaign idea 2
Escaped slaves
The players start out as villagers in a small village and to their horror slave ships come raiding for plunder. Captured the players are saved from their doomm by fate, but what of their families? Can they track down the slavers and their large organization and saved their friends and family? Starting with no equipment or gear, how will they survive?
Upside-
Downside
Campaign idea 3
Bounty hunters.
They players are bounty hunters who get sent to capture or kill escaped convicts and criminals and other strangeness. They are sent in kingdom and out of kingdom to find these runners where ever they go. Sometimes they will have to shake down old contacts to get a lead, other times they will have to investigate the runners old house and search for clues. Working outside and with in the law, they live a life of danger.
Campaign idea 4
Guild wars.
War as come to the guilds, it is both subtle and open. The players are all members of a guild or opposing guilds, and must work to crush the enemy resistance. Eventually one side will concede to the other and peace will come but until then no one is safe. Cloak and dagger activities… both sides must do their best to not alert the law, less the guild suffer royal wrath.
Campaign idea 5
The apprentice's assistant or the search for the 13 relics
Emirikol the Chaotic has died. But his lab assistant was able to hide away much of his library before the forces of chaos came to take it all. He has discovered a powerful relic hidden in 13 parts, that could destroy the forces of chaos and their hidden cult. Calling to together several mercenaries the players will go forth to recover the relic
Campaign idea 6
Alatariel defenders
The players are part of the defense force of Alatariel, can they save the kingdom of elves?
More later

A few of those sound great Harkk. I liked the Kobolds, very difficult but was fun also; the slaves sound interesting... starting with nothing and see how things buid up; Alatriel could be a really difficult place to start up with but rewarding in time... I don't know I couldn't choose. I do like Malvo also and would like to see how he progresses as well, may lead to a BIG battle with the Merc eventually. That too could be fun.

The different campaign ideas sound great. I wanted to mention something about the "campaign" concept though. Speaking for myself I like to play different types of characters. Unfortunately, lately, time has not allowed for much playing outside the Friday night game. Not to mention it is so much more satisfying to play in a group.
I think it woud be a great idea to play a character/game for a few sessions and then switch. This would keep things fresher. This would also allow new people to join in with out feeling like they are stepping into the middle of a campaign. It would also allow people to bow out for a couple sessions. Lastly, it would enable a DM rotation (look at me volunteering all of you DMs). Actually, I would be willing to try to DM a one or two night adventure if given the permission. After all I think it would only be fair to pay all you awesome DMs back - I mean that in the best possible way;-)
The Friday night games have really provided a chance to see alot of Karador. Much more than I have been able to see playing a solo character. I think adding the dimension of being able to play different character would be great too.

As far as the game ideas go I like:
The Were Clan
The Kobolds
The 13 parts to be retrieved
and
The
Alatariel defenders - Especially if I can play a cleric or paladin

Well Cyber, it seems likely that at least for now Harkker and I would be on a DM rotation with two different campaigns alternating Fridays. That'll give you a chance to run at least a second character (thrid perhaps if you also have a strong solo character. Maybe we can convince Kyrian to DM something out of Aethiope for a few of us for yet another oppertunity.
Lastly on the solo, non-campaign front; I do try to run about with my new'ish Sorcorer character who always needs a strong type to assist in various missions. Let me know when you're able to get on and we could try to run a few things together. She's 3rd level...

Sounds like a plan is coming together.
I will watch for you when I am logged on. I have a 3rd level rogue / 1st level wizard. That is a bit deciving because it is the character I ran in Harkker's Giants campaign. I still have all the equipment I found I just ended up giving back the xp I was spotted.
