I could possibly build one for the time being. NwN server wouldnt need awesome hardware, and I have some spare older (2004-2008ish) pc parts. I have a pretty darn good internet connection for residential also... 50x5.
It might keep karador alive atleast until a professional class server could be found for free/cheap.

Amazon Web Services? I think that's offered on a trial basis for a year. (At least it used to)

I think that would be awesome uthganyon if we don't find another solution... I have about a week to make back ups of everything... It goes without saying that this might delay the next installment of thel dinge...

I will see what I can get going, and as time goes by I can upgrade it if necessary. I "think" I have like a single core 2.8ghz AMD and like 1gb ram which I would think would be fine. Only thing that might be an issue for an nwn server is I probably dont have any spare fast HDD's but if performance isnt great on a 5400rpm I could probably find a 7200 cheap somewhere.
I dont know we might have to just try it out...Karador is really big but usually less than 10 people on simultaneously. If it lags all to hell we might try the amazon free trial as loo suggested.

I thik that would be a good way to go, if you don't mind the hassle... on the upside.. it will make any hak changes easier to update and test.
Probably the things to keep in mind is that we use nwnx and that requires some fiddling... but I should be able to save the server in parts so you just have to down load it on yours when you are ready.
the ip to the server will have to change as well.
but i suspect that your stuff will actually make it run better...
it is quite a hassle to reset the server every 3 or 4 days...but other than that... its not too much trouble... other than sending you the mod updates...

I have an older laptop that was a really stable platform for NWN I would be more than happy to dedicate to hosting, unfortunately the only ISP I have available is really really slow.

I have a plethora of spare computers, but they're old. But the game is old too, so what are the ideal specs to host a game? Also, my biggest problem is getting outsiders to even see my computer. Not sure what needs done with my router/firewall to allow folks in to connect.

I actually decided to try a laptop I had... It has better cpu, HDD, RAM, and bus speeds than the desktop parts I was going to use. Hopefully it stays cool, but I used to use it for 3ds Max rendering all night sometimes.
I have heard a 1.5ghz cpu, 512mb Ram is sufficient. This is a 3ghz, 1gb ram laptop.
I installed an old copy of windows 2000 server I had. If it doesnt work good, I can try linux.
As far as router, you have to forward the ports that nwn uses, and you have to convert the dynamic ip to a static one. I was going to also try to allow remote management, so builders can ftp into it to change stuff, backup, etc. (so I dont have to be around to do it)

Ok, So here is the state of things. The server we are using is going to be going away... I am going to shut it down on Monday and I will be trying to export the database and server info. I do not have the means to run a server out of my home, my computer is too old and is a family computer. So I can't have the game running all the time. Several of you have offered to run the server and if you can I think that is great. The world of Karador has been around a long time and I hate seeing it go through this trouble. So if you guys have a means of keeping it going, that is wonderful. I can continue to build the mod and dm but really don't know that much about the server side of things. Maintaining a server is only a small amount of work but dealing with ports and firewalls can be tricky. System requirements gamesystemrequirements.com/games.php?id=21Guide to running a server portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Neverwinter_Nights/default.htmport forwarding guides portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Neverwinter_Nights/default.htmIf no one can get a server going I think I will still be able to run the world on desktop as a dm client... every couple of weeks and we can continue to use this forum. Of course having the server up all the time is the best way to go. So who wants a copy of everything, just in case?

Ha took me 45 minutes to write that... Honestly uthganyon I think that would be more than enough... the thing about a server is the graphic requirements are not really there. it jsut processes things... we were using a virtual server before and it worked well enough... it also sounds like you have a good connection.
setting up nwnx can be tricky but worth it.
Overall I think it would be awesome if you could host it until we find something else... or as long as you wanted... it would be neat to see what you could do with our haks as well
I will start backing things up on monday. in the mean time some of you may want to save bic files just in case

storage should be saved in the databases so that is ok or should be... but then again so should the players be
